What to Wear for Apple Picking

Apple Picking

Apple picking is one of those classic fall activities that brings together fresh air, beautiful orchards, and delicious apples. It is one of my favorite outdoor activities, but I wonder how I should style myself every fall. So, to cut down this confusion for many of us, I have created a list of seasonal and regional style tips for an apple-picking trip. Here we go:

If You’re Going to New England in Early Fall (September)

New England is famous for its picturesque apple orchards, and in early fall, the weather can be pretty unpredictable, warm and sunny, straight to a cool breeze the next minute.

  • Start with a simple base like a lightweight long-sleeve shirt/ cotton tee.
  • Add a cardigan that you can easily tie around your waist if it warms up.
  • For bottoms, go for comfy leggings, as you’ll be walking and bending around a lot.
  • Finish the look with sneakers or ankle boots, but avoid anything too delicate. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat.

If you’re in the Pacific Northwest in Mid-Fall (October)

October in the Pacific Northwest can be rainy and chilly, and here’s how to stay dry and comfortable:

  • Go for a water-resistant jacket with a hood to protect you from light rain.
  • A knit sweater under your jacket to add warmth. Pick the one with natural fabrics like wool, as it will dry faster if it gets wet.
  • Waterproof boots are a must here.
  • A beanie or warm hat to keep the heat from escaping, especially if the wind starts blowing.

If You’re Heading to the Midwest in Late Fall (November)

Late fall apple picking in the Midwest can be downright chilly, but the beauty of the orchards is worth bundling up for:

  • Start with a thermal base layer to keep warm without adding too much bulk.
  • Over that, go for a cozy knit sweater to stay warm without sacrificing mobility.
  • Pair it with corduroy pants, which are ideal for late fall as they are sturdy, warm, and look great.
  • For footwear, wear insulated boots or hiking boots to have good traction on cold ground.
  • Gloves and a knit scarf are must-haves during this time of year.

If you’re in the South in Early Fall (Late September to October)

In southern states like Georgia or North Carolina, fall weather can still be pretty warm, especially in early fall. Here’s how to dress comfortably:

  • A lightweight cotton dress paired with a denim jacket is a great option. You’ll stay cool but can add the jacket if the temperature drops in the evening.
  • Or, capris paired with a breathable top are perfect for warmer days.
  • Wear comfortable sandals or lightweight sneakers, and avoid heavy boots.
  • Take a sun hat or sunglasses to stay cool and protected from the intense southern sun, even in fall.

If You’re Going to the Mountains (Any Time in the Fall)

Mountain orchards can be beautiful but cold, no matter what month you visit. Here’s how to stay cozy while apple-picking at higher altitudes:

  • Wear a fleece-lined jacket or puffer coat to keep warm, especially if it’s windy.
  • Layer it with long-sleeve thermals and a light sweater underneath.
  • Add thick socks and hiking boots to ensure your feet are warm and supported for all the walking.
  • Pack a warm hat and gloves, as mountain weather can change quickly, and it is essential to be prepared.

Stay warm and happy apple picking!
