Ready to make your beach day even brighter? But where’s your DIY pom-pom beach bag for packing those books, sunscreen, and your favorite snack? Don’t worry. Pick your regular old beach bag, and we can create one charming pom-pom beach bag before you leave for the shores.
Let’s start, shall we?
Things You’ll Need:
- A plain straw/ canvas beach bag/ old beach bag
- A bundle of colorful yarn in beautiful summer shades.
- Scissors
- A fork/ pom-pom maker
- Hot glue gun or a sewing kit
Step 1: Choose Your Beach Bag
First, grab a bag that’s sturdy enough for a day at the beach. I personally prefer straw bags as they are spacious, sturdy, and perfect for beaches. But honestly, any bag you have will work!
Step 2: Make Your Pom-Poms
Let’s get to the fun part: pom-poms!
- Take a fork and a 6 to 8-inch piece of yarn and wrap it into the middle prong.
- Now warp more yarn around the fork 30 to 40 times, or even 50, given how fluffy you imagine your pom-pom to be.
- You can also use a pom-pom maker available at the craft stores.
- Or, if you want to do it with your fingers, wrap the yarn around two of your fingers about 50 times.
- Further, slide the yarn off your fingers, tie a piece of yarn around the middle, and once secured, cut the loop.
- Fluff the pom-pom and trim the edges so it’s nice and round.
- Repeat this until you have a small pile of vibrant, fluffy pom-poms ready to go. Don’t be afraid to play with different sizes and colors—the more varied, the better!
Step 3: Plan Your Design
Now, it’s time to attach pom-poms to the beach bag. Take a minute to decide where you want them to be. Placing them along the edges of the bag works great, but you can totally switch it up. You can cluster them all on one side for an asymmetrical look or line them up across the front like a colorful fringe. But first, lay them out on the bag and get a feel for the design.
Step 4: Attach the Pom-Poms
Once you’ve got your layout, it’s time to attach the pom-poms.
- Either attach the pom-poms using a hot glue gun. A small dab of glue on the base of each pom-pom will do the job.
- Or, if you will use the bag frequently, stitch the pom-poms onto the fabric. This will help them stay in place even after multiple beach trips. Just grab a needle and some thread, then loop through the center of each pom-pom and sew it directly onto the bag.
- To add a touch of creativity, add tassels, beads, or even fabric patches to make your bag truly unique
Step 5: It’s Show Time
Your colorful, DIY pom-pom beach bag is ready for the sun, sand, and all the compliments it’ll get. Fill it in with all your beach essentials, and step out to bring a bit extra sunshine wherever you go.
